Levels of Change Part Two

Foundations Class #2

Levels of Change

Bob Hamp

Part Two

The second level of change is Behavior (including Thoughts-Feelings)

Once we realize that changing the circumstance will not bring change we fall into the mistake of looking at Behavior. I simply need to "stop doing this" or "start doing that"... At this level you can accomplish some things but not the thing you are hungry for.

This is connected to the level of your experience/environment. "Bob how are you doing? I'm doing fine. How do you feel? I feel great. What else is going on? I think everything is fine." OR "I'm doing lousy, I feel awful, I think I'm going to faint..." This is the outward expression of the inward experience of being you. You are describing what it's like to be you.

This creates a problem when dealing with change. If you've ever done something stupid what happens. You think "that was stupid". Then you feel stupid. Then you will continue to perpetuate this pattern. Do, Think, Feel become a self feeding cycle. The more I think stupid I feel stupid, the more I feel stupid the more I do stupid, the more I think stupid...

This is also the level of our "Flesh". A significant portion of counselors point to this level. Cognitive therapy often deals at this level. Think your way to feeling better. Rational Emotive therapy. When you think rational thoughts you will have rational emotions. Using your mind to control your behavior or shape your emotions is like arm wrestling yourself. You will win, and loose that arm wrestle. Or taking your hands and putting them under your feet and trying to lift yourself up off the floor.

Churches are guilty of this too. "All we can do is arm wrestle ourselves and some days we win and some days we loose and the blood covers the bad days. That's just the way it is..."

The way you act affects your environment. Our environment is subject to our behavior, but our behavior is reinforced by our environment/experience. Is everyone driving too slow or are you driving to fast?

Characterized by: "I wish I wouldn't..." What we discover is that what we do is connected to what we think or what we feel.

      Freedom From vs Freedom ToBe

For many Freedom is understood through the lense if being free from...Addiction
      Pain
      Loneliness
      Him/Her
      The Situation
      The Job
      Debt
      Poverty
Etc.So we follow the rat race seeking whatever we think will make us free. When that doesn't provide the freedom we sought, we seek another fix, and another... An endless cycle of seeking freedom but never being free. What if Freedom has nothing to do with whatever jail you are in, however you've defined your personal jail. What if Freedom is about becoming WHO you were always meant to be... And in that pursuit all the "other" (addiction, pain, the jails) falls off when you aren't even looking...You don't know when you got "free from", you just look back and realize you don't have all the issues you had. You have battles in front of you but you have definitely won some battles too, and you didn'teven notice you had won. It's as though the act of becoming a butterfly was so profound that you have trouble…

I Hate My Birthday... Is that wrong?

“Let the day on which I was born perish, And the night which announced: ‘There is a man-child conceived.’ JOB 3:3 AMPhttp://bible.com/1588/job.3.3.AMP
It sounds melodramatic when I read Job say it; however, this has basically been my complaint for as long as I can remember. Job 3 shows an entire chapter of him wishing he was never born and cursing his birthday. I've always hated my birthday too, often telling people to keep me off of birthday celebration lists and calendars. I've made due with life but wished I'd have left it long ago... That hasn't changed but I'm starting to get the sense that shell is cracking. Maybe, just maybe, I won't hate and despise my birthday in the future, maybe I'll learn to accept that I'm here on Earth and be happy about it? That sounds like a stretch right now. Right now I'm just content with being in a place where I'm feeling maybe being alive isn't all bad... That's a huge step up from my past 36.5 years.…

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger????

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.Ask a Vet with an amputated limb if they feel stronger now or before the limb was taken... I'd bet before. Injury, all injury, is by definition a lack of perfection. What doesn't kill you, more often than not,  makes you weaker, more timid, more cautious, slower... Not stronger.Sure, we can learn from the past, become more resilient. We can use pressure, under certain circumstances, to build resistance based strengths, like a body builder pushing back on the resistance of the weights... But by no means is the saying: "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger" an accurate portrayal of Truth, nor should it EVER be spoken to someone in pain. The enemy comes ONLY to steal, kill, and destroy, that's why the pain/attack came, not to make you stronger but to kill you.God's Grace brought you through but He didn't bring you to...God's Grace can heal you too.Selah#LiesAboutGod

II Corinthians 4:5-16 NKJV For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus …

      II Corinthians 11:23-27 NKJV
Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my  own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—

What is a Topos? A strategic position of opportunity and influence

What does Topos mean?Topos is a Greek word meaning: "Place, or Opportunity"
Properly:Any portion of space marked off, as it were, from surrounding, space Metaphorically: The condition or station held by one in any company or assemblyopportunity, power, occasion for actingA spot (general in space, but limited by occupancy; whereas chora is a large but participle locality). As used by me: Topos is a strategic position of opportunity and influence
Topos: Your Calling Everyone has a God given calling on this earth. There is something you were created and designed to do. What you are doing now may be "The Calling"; or, it may be the calling for this season of your life. Either way, you are either in your Topos, or you need to find it.

As you read the stories of biblical heros like Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David, Nehemiah, Peter, and Paul... etc... you find that God put them in the right place to do the right thing at the right time.

They ended up in their Topos, …

      The Original Fall

The First Civilization The Original Fall Pre-Adam Earth / Gap Theory / Fall of Angels
      The Thought: Big Picture...
Genesis 1:1 NKJVIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

       And Then...

Genesis 1:2 NKJV The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Some have said that this could be more accurately translated: "The Earth Became formless and void" If so, how did that happen. Then ask yourself, if Satan fell, becoming the prince of darkness and evil... WHEN did he fall? Obviously by the time Adam and Even were tending the Garden He has already been well under way as the master of trickery and deceit, coming to them disguised as a serpent. So Satan Fell BEFORE Adam walked earth... there is no indication that God paused the 7 day creation to deal with Satan and a war in heaven... What gives here? Can we know? That is my question today. In fact, as I begin this study, I don…

Idols | Images of the heart that take you away from God's Love.

Can you imagine carving a wooden statue, bowing down to it, and calling it your god?
It sounds ridiculous, right? Nobody in modern western culture would bow down to a wood statue, that's just stupid.
I've read about "Idols" all my life. I always wondered, why would these ancient people be so dumb as to bow down and worship a wooden statue? I mean, how ignorant do you have to be?

However, that got me thinking... if the entire ancient world (for most of Israel's history) had this issue with idols... there must be something more to it. Maybe, just maybe, we still deal with idols in the United States of America in 2017.

The following chapter has been my meditation for a few months now. I thought I'd share my thoughts about idols.:
      Ezekiel 14 NKJV
1 Now some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,  3 "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which cause…
